Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions
How does the treatment work? - Laser machines produce a narrow beam of coherent laser light at a specific wavelength that passes into the skin where it is absorbed and converted into heat in the hair follicles. Non-laser Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems produce a pulse of non-coherent light with a broad band of wavelengths that similarly heat up the follicles. Applying sufficient heat in the hair follicle stops further hair growth from the follicle.
What are the alternatives? - Plucking, shaving, electrolysis, waxing, depilatory creams. These can be painful, time consuming and temporary. Laser/IPL systems provide the most effective treatment.
How many treatments are needed? - Usually between 3-6 at 4-6 weekly intervals.
Are there any side effects? - Slight discomfort and redness may occur for a few days after treatment. Blistering may occur but is unusual. Very occasionally the skin pigment may be affected producing lightening or darkening in the treated area.
Does it hurt? - Some clients describe a mild feeling often described as like an elastic band being flicked against the skin.
Is treatment permanent? - Laser treatments produce permanent hair reduction. No system totally destroys all hair follicles - some are destroyed permanently, some are shrunken and some enter a prolonged resting phase.
Can any area of my body be treated? - Yes! Women often go for treatement to underarms, bikini-line, upper lip/facial hair, and legs. Men often want hair removed from their chest or back and from neck where shaving can produce soreness.
